Moving on...

I started writing these articles for Cambridge Agenda two and a half years ago, shortly after it had been launched. I notice the last paragraph of my first column included the sentence: “we promote pro-activity and confident decision making in our clients.” With our excellent editor, Charlotte Sankey, moving on, it seems a good time to decide, 26 enjoyable articles later, to leave this space to another professional! I am also about to step down after three years as Chair of Cambridge Businesswomen’s Network. Since I’m writing this at the beginning of a new year, I am feeling very positive about these movings on and looking at new ventures to undertake.

That phrase “move on” is now so over-used by tabloid journalists and therapists that maybe it has lost some of its energising connotations. It is worth remembering that, whether we are involved in positive or negative experiences, we need to re-evaluate them regularly. We can all too easily cling onto stale relationships or routine behaviours in the same way that we hang onto our out-of-fashion clothes. Is this because of laziness or something more detrimental such as fear of change? It’s a pity, because making decisions is in itself so liberating and allows us space to seize new and exciting opportunities. Quite often I find that clients get stuck in uncomfortable and difficult situations – the evil that they know – rather than put their shoulders back and stand tall, breathe deeply and GO FOR A CHANGE.

I’ve recently been working in a high turnover business which needs to change and develop in order to stay competitive. It provides a clear example of the insecurities, threats and challenges which face people in business. The founder and his sons fall into two distinct behavioural styles and personalities in their attitude towards change of any magnitude. They were in a stalemate, as two of them wanted to diversify their markets, while the others had become entrenched in their old strategies. Just a few individual and group sessions with the Board enabled them to appreciate each other’s positions, compromise on some areas and move forward with energy into a new sector.

Any individual or company can benefit from having a professional sounding-board; as our clients have realised, and as I know, it is great making decisions!
